6 Tips on How to Raise Compassionate Children

Empathy and kindness are qualities we want our kids to develop as they grow older. When we see our children having that sense of responsibility towards others, it makes us proud of them and of ourselves for doing a very good job in that aspect of parenting. Little Leaderz Day Care, Inc., a renowned childcare center in Irvine, California, takes compassion very seriously as we believe that it is a quality that will take a child far in life.

  1. Start Them Young
Your kids should learn the importance of treating things with care and the consequences that take place if they don’t.
Teach them gentleness at a young age by setting an example. Speak softly, never tolerate rudeness, and always make it a point to say “sorry” when you do something wrong. Your kids will slowly start to digest this and, before you know it, have it ingrained in their hearts and minds.
  2. Rules are Necessary
Your child needs to know that there are limits to where they can take their behavior. Some might say that being a compassionate parent is all it takes to raise a compassionate kid, but there’s really more to it than that. You need to provide structure for your children; something that teaches them wrong things will always be wrong and how they should never be done under any circumstances.
  3. Help Should Be Willingly Offered
You want your kids to help because they want to, and not just because they know it’s the right thing to do. Again, this all goes back to kindness and how important it is to show people that you care. Show your children that there should be no obstacle that keeps them from loving freely and being kind to their neighbors.
  4. Manners are a Must
We all want our kids to be well-mannered; to say “hello”, “please”, and “thank you” to mommy’s friend, the mailman, or the cleaning lady. With good manners, people are able to co-exist in a harmonious way, and it shows how much compassion a person has too!
  5. Making Friends
You want your child to make friends; but more than that, he should know how to be a good friend. One of the things that simply isn’t acceptable is name-calling. In friendships, being kind to others is the number one rule. If your child doesn’t like a person, that’s okay. But, always tell him to be nice.
  6. Consequences
Set consequences and follow through with them whenever rules are broken. Be consistent as your child may think he can get away with breaking a rule or two if you happen to be in a lenient mood. Your child may be too young to understand about morals, which is why you need to assist him in resisting those rule-breaking impulses in other ways. Your child should avoid doing what he knows is wrong because he knows it’ll get him into trouble.

Parents can raise kind and compassionate children with the help of reputable child care centers like Little Leaderz Day Care, Inc. We are also renowned for our preschool program in Irvine, a standout program that develops self-help, self-confidence, and decision-making skills in your toddlers.
